Ordinary and toughened glass both leave an open hole once broken. Security glass is laminated: two or more panes bonded with tough interlayers, so an attacker faces layer after layer while the pane stays in the frame. Heavier builds with more layers and stiffer interlayers move from forced-entry resistance towards bullet resistance.

The glass is only half the system. A security pane in a weak frame is a weak point. We size and anchor the aluminium or steel-reinforced framing, the beads and the fixings to hold the glass under attack, and we detail teller counters, transaction windows, doors and screens as complete assemblies.

Frequently asked questions

What is security glass and how does it work?

Security glass is laminated glass: multiple panes bonded with tough plastic interlayers. When attacked it cracks but stays in one piece, so the opening remains closed. More layers and stiffer interlayers increase resistance, up to ballistic-rated builds.

Is toughened glass security glass?

No. Toughened glass is strong against impact but once it breaks it falls away and leaves an open hole. Security glazing must stay in place, which is what lamination does.

Do you supply bulletproof glass?

We supply ballistic-rated laminated glazing built up to the level your security assessment specifies, together with framing designed to hold it. Tell us the threat level and we will specify the build.

Can existing windows be upgraded?

Often, either by replacing the glass with laminated security glass in a strengthened frame or by applying anti-shatter film as an interim measure. We assess the frames first, because the frame must be able to hold the heavier glass.
