A glass balustrade keeps the view and the light that a solid wall or a metal railing takes away. The glass is doing structural work, holding people back at an edge, so the specification is not cosmetic: the glass type, the thickness and the fixings have to be right for the span and the height.

Frameless balustrades fix the glass in a floor channel or on standoff bolts, with or without a top handrail. Where there is no handrail, laminated toughened glass is the responsible choice, because it stays in place if a panel ever breaks. Framed and post-and-rail systems carry the load in the frame and can use toughened glass.

The fixing is only as good as what it is fixed to. Before fabrication we check whether the balcony edge, the stair stringer or the slab can take the fixings, and we tell you if it needs preparation first.

Are glass balustrades safe?

Yes, when the glass type, thickness and fixings are specified for the location and installed correctly. We use toughened or laminated toughened safety glass, and laminated toughened wherever the glass must stay in place after breakage, such as frameless balustrades without a handrail.

Do I need a handrail on a frameless glass balustrade?

It depends on the glass specification and the location. A frameless balustrade without a handrail should use laminated toughened glass so that a broken panel stays in place. We advise at the site visit.

Can you fit a glass balustrade to an existing balcony or staircase?

Usually, subject to the edge or the stringer being able to take the fixings. We inspect the substrate at the measurement and tell you if any preparation is needed first.

Which glass do you use for balustrades?
